Explore research projects about Big Data

The 1st Workshop on Big and Complex Data Theory, Applications and Value Creation took place in May. The latter was hold by ICT4V (Information communication Technologies for Verticals), and CABIDA (Research Centre for Big data). PhD Cecilia Aguerrebere (Researcher at Ceibal Foundation) presented a characterization of “Big Data for Education at Plan Ceibal”. The presentation emphasis the current importance of this field of knowledge, particularly in Uruguay since 2007, when every student in public education has a laptop or tablet, and all public schools have internet access.

Main dimensions

360 Student Profile
This project includes differents educational resources of Ceibal Plan with the aim to through light into the following questions:
  • How devices, infrastructure, connectivity, educational platforms are used at a national scale?
  • What features of an online learning environment lead to better performance learning?
  • What student actions are associated with better performance and engagement?
  • When are students falling behind in the course?

WiFi network characterization
The main objective is to study network usage at user, school, country level.
Data sources:
  • Over 1200 educational sites
  • Accumulated traffic per device
  • Accumulated traffic per application (for a subsample of sites)

The image 2 shows some results. Specifically the months of the year when the use is more sustained:

Feedback in Online Learning Environments
The goal of the study is to study feedback interactions within an online learning environment. The principal platform that will be used in this study is CREA2. The methodology of the study includes two phases. In the first step is promovide the use of the platform to identify feedback patterns and in a second step is evaluate the effectiveness of the different categories on students’ performance and engagement.
Here the principal questions:
  • Which and how tools is necessary to develop to support teachers?
  • How Increases students’ engagement?
  • Do gender or socio-cultural factors affect these results?
  • How we can Improves students’ performance?
New Device Deployment Effect (finalized)
Research questions:
  • Large-scale educational computing initiatives designed to bridge the digital divide and boost learning outcomes: it is vital to allocate resources judiciously
  • How learners’ engagement with online educational resources is affected by receiving a new computer; do the benefits justify the costs?
The methodology was a quasi experimental design to measure the effect of device deployment during 2015-2017 on 6th grade students’ online learning activity (specifically in maths).
Some conclusions:
  • The estimated relative increase on 2016 students’ overall LMS activity is 49%.
  • The effects are positive for both 2015 and 2016, and they persist over two months after the device delivery.
  • Students attempt to solve stat. sig. more (88%) math problems during the one month after they receive a new device.
  • No differences in gender.
  • Possible explanations: Novelty, Availability
English as a Second Language: Performance Prediction
This project has the aim to deep in the performance prediction for an early warning system, from the research of Ceibal in english program. This includes: Video-conference network, Remote English classes and Remote teachers as principal educational resources

Ceibal promotes the safety use of data. The groups below are working in this aspects:
