The president of the Ceibal Foundation and Ceibal, Leandro Folgar, was a panellist at the Education World Forum 2023, which was held on May 7-10 in London and brought together 118 countries to reflect on how to nurture a learning culture, build resilience, and promote sustainability and digital transformation.
Folgar was part of the plenary session that addressed the topic of technology, along with Mike Trucano, senior education and technology policy specialist at the World Bank, Arbërie Nagavci, Kosovo’s Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, and Choi Yuk-lin, Secretary for Education of China and Hong Kong SAR.
In his presentation, the President of the Ceibal Foundation and Ceibal shared Ceibal’s strategy for building the infrastructure and model that promote digital self-determination in the Uruguayan education system, the challenges involved in this, the evolution of classroom practices, and an innovation that has been highly successful in the country, namely transmedia content for education.
Folgar drew attention to the supply of resources to the Uruguayan education system and the work carried out by the Ceibal Foundation in terms of research and academia. He also referred to the transmedia novel “Mystery of Cape Cold: Along the Riverbanks”, which emerged as a response to the pandemic and used a story as a learning environment. This novel was released in different formats (book, radio, social networks and comics). Folgar highlighted the success of these experiences and commented that a second transmedia novel was released this year: “1930 El viaje”. In addition, he showed a preview of the documentary “Un País Así”, an account of Ceibal’s educational experiences and work in its first 16 years.
The President of the Ceibal Foundation and Ceibal brought his speech to a close by reflecting on the role of technology in education: “Technology is not going to solve all the problems of education, but there is no future for education without technology”.
