Publication of the book “Technology: What it can and cannot do for education”

The Inter-American Development Bank published the book “What Technology Can and Can’t Do for Education: A Comparison of 5 Stories of Success”, which includes the experience of the creation and development of Plan Ceibal in Uruguay. Likewise, the article “A multimedia strategy in new educational contexts: The experience of Plan Ceibal” was recently published, which includes the learning of Uruguay during the period of suspension from classes with an emphasis on strategies for the development of 21st Century Skills.

The publication “What Technology Can and Can’t Do for Education: A Comparison of 5 Stories of Success” was produced in 2019 and published in June 2020. There, the challenges faced by education systems to train new generations are presented and analyzed. , addressing issues such as changes in the labor market, the role of 21st century skills, as well as the integration of digital technologies in education. Five country success stories are addressed -among them Uruguay- that show the challenges, opportunities and complexities for the integration of digital technologies in education, the transformations of the different educational systems considered and the changes generated in learning.

The chapter “Integrating information and communications technology into education: Uruguay” written by Alessia Zucchetti, Cristóbal Cobo and Mariana Montaldo, narrates the creation and development of the Ceibal Plan from 2007 to the present, presenting the national strategy for digital education from a holistic approach and includes reflections and considerations on current and future challenges facing education.

On the other hand, in the article “A multimedia strategy in new educational contexts: The experience of Plan Ceibal”, Alessia Zucchetti and Mariana Montaldo collect the strategies and measures adopted in the face of the suspension of classes generated by the COVID-19 pandemic, retaking some of the aspects dealt with in the chapter “Integrating information and communications technology into education: Uruguay” and analyzing the particularities of the “Ceibal at Home” strategy, in particular some aspects associated with 21st Century Skills.
