EdTech State of the Art
The Ceibal Foundation is a self-governing organization that seeks to respond to challenges related to learning and the mediation of technologies through innovative methodologies and a practical, social and participatory approach. In this context, it produces, promotes and
disseminates evidence on the state of the art of digital education in Latin America, the Caribbean and the world.
Since its inception in 2015, the Ceibal Foundation has managed to position itself as a recognized institution at the national, regional and international level, joining and forming networks of excellence in research and innovation. In line with this, the Foundation plays a leading role in creating spaces for international dialogue. Through the Alliance for the Digitalization of Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (ADELA), the Foundation promotes high-level exchange among ministers, technical staff and representatives of international, regional and global organizations for the development of public policies on education and technology.
The Foundation also works to promote the strengthening of the capacities of policy makers and the technical teams of the education ministries in Latin America and the Caribbean, and produces evidence for making informed decisions on educational technology focusing on the learning needs of students, particularly those most marginalized. In addition, it promotes the adoption of sustainable innovations to support high-quality, inclusive digital education in the countries in the region, above all the most vulnerable. In keeping with this line of action, the Foundation identifies and disseminates experiences that provide responses to education and technology challenges and promote collaboration and exchange between countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Furthermore, the Foundation led the organization of the Montevideo Meeting for the worldwide launch of the Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on technology in education, an event held in coordination with the GEM Report team, based at UNESCO Paris, and the Ministry of Education and Culture of Uruguay. For the first time, this report was presented in a Spanish-speaking and Latin American country.
The Foundation also carries out research, innovation and dissemination projects in the region that seek to promote the use of technological resources and the development of tools for high-quality, inclusive digital education. To date, its portfolio features over 70 projects, 60 conferences and 150 publications, and the intention is to keep providing knowledge and tools for education and technology.
One of the main initiatives implemented by the Ceibal Foundation is an app for learning literacy that is being developed in collaboration with Ceibal with funding by BID Lab and ReachingU, and with the Catholic University of Uruguay as a strategic partner. Another major project led by the Ceibal Foundation in collaboration with Peru’s GRADE (Spanish acronym for Grupo de Análisis para el Desarrollo or Development Analysis Group) was “Playing and Learning: Scaling a Maths Digital Game in Schools across Peru and Latin America.” This initiative sought to address the challenges related to the negative effects of COVID-19 on the learning of Latin American students.
