Technology for the educational inclusion of refugees, migrants and displaced persons in Latin America and the Caribbean
Ceibal Foundation is leading the project “Technology for the educational inclusion of refugees, migrants and displaced persons in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC)” with the aim of producing evidence and promoting discussion among key players on the role of technology in education for refugees, migrants and displaced persons in LAC.
Forced displacement due to conflicts, human rights violations, socio-environmental disasters and climate change impacts hinders learning for thousands of migrants. LAC is the region with the largest number of migrants per capita in the world, amounting to 15 million in 2020 (UNDP, 2023, Migration: a phenomenon that touches millions of lives in Latin America and the Caribbean), and one in four is a child.
In this context, education plays a key role in the well-being of children and their families. In addition, it brings about a protective effect that provides socio-emotional support and promotes knowledge and skills for social inclusion among those hit by the consequences of displacement.
Funded by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the project seeks to explore and systematize the role of digital technology, identify innovations, and come up with recommendations on the use of technology for inclusive, equitable education in LAC.
